When I first started karate, I was nervous. It was scary to think that I would be in a class with kids I had never
met before. It took a few classes to get used to the rhythm, and once I got to know everyone I wasn’t scared anymore.
For the first few months, we worked on basic techniques and Power Kata. Every night after a class my muscles were so sore,
it was hard to move. It was worth it though, in the following weeks my muscles got stronger and the classes got a little easier.
After many weeks of learning new techniques, katas and practicing, I went to my first real karate tournament. It
was very interesting. There were a lot of people, both spectators and participants alike. When my name was called for Kata,
I was really nervous. All I could do was hope I didn’t mess up. I went in front of the judges and did my kata anyways.
I was so relieved when it was over that all I wanted to do was sit and calm down. I got first place for my kata, only because
I worked hard and didn’t give up.
A few of my classmates were there. It was fun to be able to cheer them on and hope that they did well. It was awesome
to hear their names called for medals as well. I left the tournament excited to get to the next class and share our stories.
In the classes after that we worked on our kata’s and basics a lot more. I realized that if I wanted to place
in a tournament again, I would have to work even harder. My main goal though was to improve my kata and kumite skills. I began
to spar harder and with more focus.
The Sensei's continued to teach us many things, like how to block a punch with a rising block, or how to do a proper
sidekick. There were a lot of things to learn, it was, and still is, hard to keep the names straight. During that time we
were reviewing techniques for our report cards and the midyear grading.
I was very excited and shocked when I was given my strip. I felt a real sense of accomplishment. I also knew, from
that point on I would have to work even harder. I wanted to earn my yellow belt. Happily, I now wear one and plan to continue
taking classes so that one day I can be a black belt.
Karate has helped me learn to slow my breathing and clam my nerves. It has given me a strong sense of self-confidence
and focus. My Senseis have been very supportive and helpful, especially through my not so great moments. Not only did I find
a love for Karate this year, but also I feel I have gained many new friends.
I would like to say Thank You to my Senseis and my friends for their support this year and I can’t wait to
see them all again next year.
